Rehabilitation Defined – Facts and Treatments

From BusinessDictionary.com: Rehabilitation is the restoration of an entity to its normal or near normal roles, capabilities after the occurrence of a disabling event. It is often associated with medical, substance and alcohol abuse and mental treatments. If the concept of rehab had already been popular before, Humpty Dumpty wouldve been taken to one and put back together again.

There are now many forms of rehabilitation depending on what is going to be rehabilitated or restored to its normal or near normal state. Because of the many types or kinds of rehabilitation, programs and protocols have been thought of and developed over the decades which correspond to a specific kind of rehab. There are also hundreds, if not thousands of rehab facilities all over the world. Hospitals and Clinics are the dominant source or rehabilitation. Private Residential Rehab Centers have also been established to service patients with different and rare requirements.

Mental Rehabilitation had come a long way in terms of facilities, diagnosis and treatment. No longer are patients confined in cold and white-tiled hospital facilities. We always have this concept that if a person has mental illness, most likely hell be dragged from his house with straight jacket on like the award winning character of Jack Nicholson in One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest. Although in extreme situations, that could nevertheless be true. Searching on the internet for mental rehabs, almost all of them are now modernized with state of the art equipment and facilities. Only qualified and experienced medical staffs are hired and trusted to care for patients. A shared kind of psychiatric disorder is Anxiety. Types of Anxiety disorder are Obsessive-Compulsive (OCD), Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Panic Disorder and Social Phobia. You may recognize OCD in the character of Adrian Monk in the television series, MONK, whos an obsessive-compulsive detective. Another typical character is again played by Jack Nicholson in the movie As Good as It Gets.

Depression, Bipolar and Dysthymic Disorders fall under Mood Disorder. Among these, Depression is the most shared among Americans. Psychotic disorder however is a mental disorder that is associated with delusions and hallucinations. One typical example and may be one of the most difficult to treat is Schizophrenia.

Physical and Medical Rehabilitation, like Mental Rehab, have also gone by a lot of exciting developments throughout the century. Medical conditions which were deemed fatal now have strong chances of survival. Heart bypass, knee and other shared joint or bone injuries in addition as TBI or traumatic brain injury are already being treated and rehabilitated today. Some situations, depending on the severity of the injury, are restored to 100% capacity. Equipments and latest medical technology allows an individual to move, run and enjoy life after what should have been a disabling accident.

Alcohol and Substance Abuse were considered a disease before. But thanks to modern science, a better understanding of addiction disorders gave light and understanding to the human addictive character or disorders. Spa-looking-treatment-centers are all over the country. Families along with the community participate in the healing course of action of the patient. Victims of addiction are now understood instead of judged.

In all of these rehabilitation treatments, Holistic approach is what medical professionals are aiming at. It is the caring and treatment of the complete being of a person: Physical, psychological and Spiritual. There are programs such as Equine Therapy, Creative Arts and Music Therapy and Experiential Treatment all for the wellness of the mind and spirit.
