Q: I recently had a DUI and was told that I had to get SR22 insurance. What is this and how do I get it? Also how much will it cost?

A: SR22 insurance is basically a certificate your insurance company will file with the local DMV that states you are covered in the event of an accident. This kind of insurance is in addition to the regular auto insurance policy you are required to have. This kind of policy is usually required of someone who has had multiple accidents, a DUI/DWI, or multiple moving violations in a short period of time. Some companies will not insure a driver who requires this kind of coverage.

It is not difficult to find companies that will issue an SR22 policy if you do some minimal research. Almost all larger companies will issue this kind of policy. The requirements for this coverage differ from state to state so be sure to contact your local DMV before purchasing one.

If you are required to buy an SR22 policy you are usually required to have it keep in effect for a period of three years. If the policy lapses for any reason your insurance company is required to notify the DMV. If this happens you will lose your license and not be allowed to excursion until a new policy is in effect. It is difficult to calculate the cost of coverage as the price will depend on many factors including where you live, why you need this kind of insurance, and other factors.
